How this works.
As
a family research group, participants qualify for a reduced rate
on each of the two Y chromosome DNA tests provided by Family Tree
DNA (FTDNA).
Results
obtained from this testing are completely confidential and can
not be used for any other purpose. Each participant is assigned a
unique customer number. The identity of participants is not
revealed to the lab at the University of Arizona where the DNA
analysis is performed. Only the customer number and surname of
the donor of the sample are released to the lab.
The
12 marker test can determine if there is a relationship, a Most
Recent Common Ancestor (MRCA), between two men with the same
surname 14 generations ago and earlier. The MRCA would have been
living about 350 years ago, or earlier. Normally, this test costs
$149 plus $2 shipping. Participants of our family project pay
$99, plus $2 shipping in the US, $4 international.
The
25 marker test can determine if there is a MRCA between two males
of the same surname about 7 generations ago and earlier. The MRCA
would have been living about 175 years ago, or earlier. Normally,
this test costs $209, plus $2 shipping. Participants of our
family project pay $169, plus $2 shipping in the US, $4
international.
As
project manager for the Daniel DNA project, interested parties
should contact me and I will enroll them
in the study and arrange to have a testing kit mailed to them.
Participants will receive an invoice for payment with their kit.
FTDNA plans to enable credit card payments by members of family
projects in the near future.
The
testing kit consists of two small brushes and two vials of
preservative liquid. Participants brush the inside of their cheek
with one of the brushes and then insert the brush into one of the
vials, pushing on the end of the brush which ejects the brush
into the vial, which is then sealed. This is repeated with the
other brush. Both vials are mailed to FTDNA using the envelope
that is provided.
A
release form is included with the kit. This form authorizes FTDNA
to share your test results ONLY with others whose tests indicate
that there is a familial relationship. You will receive contact
information for these individuals, if they have also signed the
release form.
Test
results take several weeks for processing. When the results are
obtained, participants will be informed of DNA matches.
Complete
instructions are included with the kit and more information is
available on FTDNA's web site.
